Exit 29 shops, dining and lodging

Exit 29 Region
The exit 29 area, 29 miles north of Florida and about 75 miles south of South Carolina is an affordable and convenient alternative to staying on Jekyll Island (11 miles away). This map is only 1 1/2 miles wide, so everything is close and accessible. The cheapest gas in the region is at the TA Travel Plaza (formally Goasis) (BP) just west of I-95 and the Flying J plaza (Conoco) accross the street. We have had good reports from visitors about the Microtel Inn and Suites, as well as the new Comfort Inn. The Super 8 and Econolodge are operated by the same owner and are clean and well maintained. Beyond fastfoo and diner fare are Zachry's Seafood and Steak House and Bubba JAX Crab Shack . The food at both places is good and the prices are reasonable. There are several affordable diners in the neigborhood and the usual fast food, too. I like Larry's Giant Subs next to Winn Dixie market, too. The famous Georgia Pig BBQ is gone, we are afraid, as of early 2012, but ask us about Captain Stan's Smokehouse, about 15 miles south on Rt. 17 in Woodbine. It is a classic back-country dive, mostly outdoors with dirt floors, featuring ribs, BBQ and good home-made sides. Good music too!
