Beamer IV 4-Line Traction Kite, HQ
|
 |
The Beamer has always been the most recommended kite for first time traction kite fliers and the 4th generation has gotten even better. Updated planform and profiles (airfoil shape) have added improved acceleration and control over the brakes, much like a more sophisticated race kite, but the design maintains its well known stability and easy flying characteristics. The medium aspect ratio (A/R) contributes to stability and predictability, with smooth power build up as it powers through the wind window. The Beamer is the perfect all-around traction kite for recreational flying on land and snow, and excels as a first kite buggy engine.
Just because this kite is great for novices does not make it a slack performer. There is a reason that you do not see many of these on the used market; people hold on to them for their stability and predictability in high winds and mixed conditions. Some of my fastest buggy speeds have been with a Beamer where the smoothness in high and gusty winds have been a comfort.
Other enhancements this year include "dirt out" traps with Velcro closure to evacuate sand and debris from the wingtip cells, a feature previously found only on much more expensive kites. Graphics and color schemes have been updated as well. Sheathed Dyneema bridles feature sewn loops to reduce snags and tangles and color coding helps keep everything sorted out when setting up (they look sharp, too). Stitching and construction quality is top-notch, with reinforcements added in in high stress areas to ensure years of dependable service.
The kite killers included are the latest model with beefy bungee cords and webbing loops that make attaching them to the brake leaders easy and secure. If you ever get into a bad moment with the kite, just let go of the handles and the kite flips back on the brake lines, instantly depowering and falling to the ground on slack lines.
If this is your first traction kite, start with something up to 3.0m size, maybe 4.0m if you are built big and heavy, but be careful and fly in winds under 10 mph at first. Remember that the wind ranges listed below are approximate and depend a lot on pilot skill, experience, and riding style. Don't make the mistake of starting with a large kite and trying to compensate by waiting for lighter winds- that's actually very difficult and you are likely to get frustrated and even hurt. You actually get more for your money with a small or moderate sized kite because you end up with a broader usable wind range. If you have any questions at all, please call us, we are happy to help and love talking about kites.
