Q-PowerLine represents over 5 years of research and development to engineer the ultimate line specifically for traction kiting applications. The unique cored construction utilizes continuous linear strands of very high tenacity Spectra 2000® fiber encased in an extremely tight braided Spectra 2000 sheath. The resulting line exhibits the ideal characteristics for traction kiting:
- Almost zero stretch means minimal length adjustments and incredible kite “feel” when flying,
- No sleeving required makes it easy to produce your own custom sets.
- A round cross-section minimizes parasitic wind-drag increasing both the kites forward speed and response to pilot input
- A tight external braid reduces dirt abrasion, and a higher modulus (stiffness) than traditional lines almost totals eliminates line tendency to tangle.
If you hold Q-PowerLine in your hand with regular braided line of the same strength, it will seem to be much thicker, but wind tunnel testing has shown it to produce about half the drag of standard line. The reason is that braided line will flatten out like a ribbon when put under load and will vibrate in the airstream, increasing its effective diameter considerably. Q-PowerLine on the other hand will maintain its aerodynamic round cross section under load, due to the stiff and tightly woven sheath. These guys make specialty line sets for the military and really know what they are doing.
The same sheath that gives it a round cross section is also woven so tight that when you drag your lines through the sand and dirt, abrasive particles are not going to get into the internal braid where they can cause wear, as happens with normal braided Dyneema or Spectra. For this Reason, Q-PowerLine will last up to six times longer than regular line. The 600 lb test rating is very conservative, too.
Because of the sheath, no additional sleeving is needed to tie your loops. Just use a figure-of-eight know on the bare line. The line is very low stretch, but you should still pre-stretch the lines to set the fibers and remove any kinks. Do this before you tie your second knot/ loop on each line.
