Montana V, De-Power Kite, HQ

Montana V, De-Power Kite, HQ

Montana V

The Montana V is a highly refined foil kite that combines stability and performance using developments in paragliding technology. A higher aspect ratio and more efficient profile provide increased de-power with quicker turning and faster flying speed. Constructed without stiff mylar laminate sail cloth of the earlier versions, the canopy is better able to absorb gusts for greater stability (and less weight).  The Montana V is easy to handle while offering high end performance for the demanding pilot. The bar system has been redeveloped and the new molded chicken loop offers increased safety and user-friendliness. The new backpack is even more technical and offers attachment points for all kinds of boards, helmets and harnesses. Whether you want to explore the backcountry or focus on freestyle, the Montana V delivers.

We have always loved the Montana line of de-powers and now that designer Tom Bordeau has added his influences, it is even better.  HQ lists this kite as suitable for intermediate to expert riders, but really it is not much more difficult to fly than the Apex entry-level de-power.  There is simply more performance.  The added complexity of the two-pulley compound mixer system may be a bit more intimidating for the new de-power rider, but it really makes a big difference, as it serves not just to change the angle of attack,  but changes the camber of the sail as well.  If you look on the HQ web site, it will indicate that the Montana is not recommended for the buggy, but this is just the silly German's predilection to riding buggies only with four-line handles.  The Montana makes a great buggy engine, as turning down the lift to keep you in the bug just improves the already impressive upwind performance.  Park-and-ride stability lets you easily reach for a water bottle or a camera with one hand while flying with the fingertips of the other.
