The Montana is the flagship of the HQ line and it just keeps getting better. The de-power range is expanded (again) and so is the turning speed and stability in the turns. The Montana is really at home in the snow and mountains, using mother nature's chair lift- the wind. While the LEI guys are struggling to inflate their bladder in the thin mountain air, Montana riders are off and riding, often in light wind that would leave others waiting. With the faster turning speed of the Montana 6, kiteloops are insane.
As happy as the Montana is in the snow, it is just at home on the beach or in a field. Land boarders will appreciate the lift and float and kiteloops will be attainable for more riders. The expanded de-power range will make it easier to trade lift for upwind work in the buggy, helping to keep riders firmly seated. Here on Jekyll Island we have the great "Shipwreck Run" made popular at JIBE (Jekyll Island Buggy Expo) 10i0 and what make is so challenging rounding the south end of the island and shifting wind direction by ninety degrees. It's a great test of the rider's and kite's downwind and upwind abilities and we have always found Montanas up to the task. With the improved turning speed of the M6, more riders will be comfortable with downloops when rounding their jibes.
Another thing that rider are saying about the M6 is that when you are up to speed and you pull in the bar for more, the power really comes on smooth and constant, surging but never yanking. This is another quality that will make downloops in the buggy super sweet and I cannot wait to try it.
The de-power bar has been further refined, with the secondary release on the chicken loop newly re-designed to be snow and sand-resistant. The bar comes with lines attached and connected to the kite, taking the term "ready to fly" to a new extreme.
While the Montana's little brother the "Apex" is mean to be an entry-level de-power kite, the Montana is so easy to fly and stable that we have no trouble recommending it to a first-time de-power rider who has had time with larger fixed bridle foils in a variety of wind ranges. Just remember that de-power kites are larger than equivalent fixed bridle kites in terms of power output, so your first de-power kite will be huge compared to what you are used to. Start out in moderate conditions and any apprehension you have will quickly go away when you launch and see how easy it is to fly. Whether your goal is to snowkite, ride a land board or buggy, some prior experience with fixed-bridles will be beneficial, since the improved upwind performance over the Apex means that the Montana will race to the edge of the window faster and you will want to be ready for it.
CWS Team riders Bobby Muse and son Wexler (HQ Team Rider) got the scoop on the new prototypes on a recent visit to North Carolina's Outer Banks. Bobby right away noticed the faster turning with none of the tip tuck seen on other kites. They'll be adding a 9.5 meter to their quiver for runs in the buggy and on their land board. Wexler's first take on the Montana 6 after flying it...
"well the m6 is still pretty racy but the tip folding is not a big problem. Its a lot more stable than the m5 and a little faster so good improvement over the m5."
Something about the broad wind ranges listed below; they are accurate but.... The crazy low numbers like 4 mph are with an experienced rider who does not mind running like a dog to launch, and then knows to keep the kite moving in its apparent wind once up. The high numbers can hold up in deeper snow when you can hold an edge against that much power. On a land board or buggy, the wheels are going to break loose long before, depending on your weight and tires.

CWS EXCLUSIVE: With each HQ de-power order we will include a HQ Safety leash like this one FREE of charge! ($44.00 value). It is possible for just about any de-power kite to become unhooked (and grabbing a bar all powered up is always an-eye opener), so we recommend a leash connected to the landing handle for added piece of mind.
